Zoe Piper, The Internet And Everything

Archive for April, 2009

I haven’t bought a CD in years so it was complete accident I came across the front cover of Empire of the Sun’s album (it was on Spotify). It’s possibly the best album art I’ve ever seen, I can’t even express how much I think it rocks:

sci fi me up

It’s got tigers, the future – all the elements of success. I really hope the band look like that in real life.

I’ve only visited Gizmag once. Never again.

Shame On You, Gizmag!

i'm never subscribing so give it up

Branded3 are at Internet World at the moment and to mark the occasion Blogstorm has a snazzy new Twitterfall widget showing real time updates about the event. If you want your tweet to appear on Blogstorm just mention Internet World or the #iwexpo hashtag.

I like vouchers

After blogging about my awesome trip to Warwick Castle, the lovely folk who represent them sent me a couple of two-for-one vouchers since I didn’t get to see the dungeon last time. I’d love to go again but it’s a long way to Warwick and the vouchers run out in August so chances are I won’t be able to use both.

If anyone wants the redundant voucher, leave a comment or send me an email and I’ll stick it in the post :)

I guess this is first-come first-served so I’ll update here when it’s gone.

Happy days here at Branded3 – we’ve been made Internet World’s official ’social media partner’. Internet World is a huge 3-day event held down in London and it’s attended by some massive agencies, so for us to be chosen to help the organisers tell everyone about the power of blogging, twitter etc is pretty special.

This is the press release, taken from the Internet World site:

Branded3, the Leeds based digital agency, has just been appointed by Internet World as the official Social Media Partner for 2009.

Internet World is Europe’s longest running, best attended and biggest event for digital marketing and online businesses, attracting over 13,000 visitors and more than 300 exhibitors. This year’s event will take place at Earls Court, London from 28-30 April 2009 and is the show-case for digital talent and innovation in the UK.

The appointment will require Branded3, who specialise in production, search and social-media marketing, to develop the Internet World’s Guide to Promoting Brands using Twitter, and to help Internet World exploit the viral brand development opportunities on Twitter, the blogosphere and numerous other online social media.

Patrick Altoft, Branded3’s Head of Social Media was clearly delighted with the announcement and commented, “Internet World is huge, anyone and everyone involved with Digital Marketing with be visiting or exhibiting at the show. For a non-London Agency to be recognised in this way is very flattering. The Social Media Team at Branded3 is very proud.”

Branded 3, based in Aberford North Leeds, is one of the most successful ethical SEO & social media companies in the UK, boasting high profile clients such as Interflora, Dial-a-phone and Abel & Cole.

Dyanmically inserting a keyword into your Adwords headline is a great way to increase your click-through rate. Searchers see the exact phrase they typed in, in your advert and you can’t get much more targeted than that. If the search phrase is too long to fit into the headline, it uses your chosen default phrase instead.

The code to dynamically insert a keyword is {keyword:defaultphrase}

Not, as one advertiser thought:

always check your ads

No matter how careful you are you can still make mistakes, but this is a great argument for always checking your ads!

It seems at the Techcrunch Geek n’ Rolla they’re talking about how to get more women into tech start-ups. One of the panellists has created a survey to take a look at the equalities (or otherwise) between women and men in tech.

With a question like this, what do you think the outcome of this survey will be?

biased, non?

I’d never actually heard of Silicon Stillettos before. It’s a social networking site for women in tech. Their tagline is: “It’s time to put your heels on!” I know, how about we have another site called “Developer Divas” or “Sexy SEOs”. I really don’t want to go into the argument again, but this is a great example of the faux-feminism that really gets my goat.

You can’t giggle over shoes and make-up one minute, then complain about the old boy’s club the next. It sort of undermines your credibility.

whats honolulu got to do with anything

Family theme park Pleasure Island seem to have come a cropper with their hosting company. I visited the site today and got this message:

woopsie

This is the second time in just over a month that Pleasure Island have experienced bandwidth difficulties – a sure sign they ought to change their hosting company?

I was trying to check the cinema times last night when this overlay got in the way – the terrible thing was that it followed me around when I tried to scroll away and the X button was always just off screen so it took me ages to close it. By ages I mean about 5 seconds, but in browsing time that’s long enough for me to say ’screw you Vue’ and close the website twice over.

Shame On You, Vue Cinema!
