Zoe Piper, The Internet And Everything

I recently set up an Adwords account for a client only to get the error message at keyword level – this keyword is not triggering ads because “you have reached or exceeded your budget”. The problem was, the adverts had never even shown – it was a new account!

A Google search brought a few suggestions – lower the CPC, increase the daily budget, etc etc, but nothing worked. I thought it might be the billing information so left it over the weekend to see what would happen. Monday morning came and the ads still wouldn’t show!

Luckily we have a Google Rep on hand to help – a quick email got a response within the hour. The account was ‘under review’ and would be active shortly. Sure enough the ads were running the same afternoon.

It’s great that our Google Rep got things sorted so quickly, but they didn’t seem to know the account was under review until I told them. Also, the error message in the account had nothing to do with a review! For someone new to Adwords it would be really confusing – lots of people on the message boards that I read were having the same problem, only they didn’t have the advantage of a representative at Google.

I’ve never had an account under review before – I wonder if Google have started to do this more. If that’s the case they should let advertisers know to expect delays.

no, it’s not under review as they claimed, your account have been banned, I’ve been in this situation many times.

Hi Bill, thanks for the comment. Could you give a bit more info about your own situation? What sort of account got banned? Did you speak to anyone at Google about it for their feedback?

I have run into the same thing. What do the rest of us do who don’t have a Google rep handy?

    Hi Bob,

You can contact Google through your Adwords account but in my experience they don’t get back to you. Unless you’re an Agency, support seems to be crap – it’s something Google need to address I’m afraid. I’d be interested to know how many accounts come online after a few days and how many never do. I’ve heard people say they’ve increased their budget and that’s triggered the ads so might be something to try.

‘Conspiracy theorists’ have speculated that Google deliberately make Adwords difficult to use so only Agencies will be able to use it (and only advertisers with big budgets will be able to hire an Agency).

Wow Kris, that’s a huge budget! Did you really find a search term you can spend that much on?

[...] trouble with Adwords, and I’ve said it before, is that the features allow clashes and bugger-ups, and the error messages are woefully inadequate. [...]

Does anyone know what steps one should take if we can’t directly contact a rep? I am getting this error and my budgets are set high and we have received zero clicks and can never manage to see our ads when we search even very specific keywords.
