Talking to friends who’ve bought premium themes however, it’s not always plain sailing. Like any pre-made system there are limitations to any theme. Say you buy a theme which does everything EXCEPT one thing, which you then have to code in/hack yourself. Or say the standard of coding is okay but not perfect – there’s no objective grading method so although premium themes from places like Themeforest are meant to be good, what you get really depends on the ability of whoever coded them. You buy on trust.

Frog explains the difference between a font and a typeface…

A Typeface Is: the design of the type – a set of letters and numbers in a specific style.

A Font Is: the digital file that tells your computer what the typeface should look like when you use it.

The Web is officially coming of age. The design industry is starting to take web design seriously, and it’s no longer being confined to enthusiasts. Web design is now a lucrative and exciting career path to follow, with lots of opportunity and high potential earning power.

With the Internet developing so rapidly over the past 10 years, those that are just dipping their toes into the industry may well feel that they’ve missed the boat. The truth is, you don’t need to have been there when flashing GIF animations were cool, and the best form of promotion was through a web ring. In fact, in some ways it’s better if you didn’t see these dark days so that your perception of web design isn’t muddied by these frankly horrific things.

If you are looking to design for the web, welcome, and prepare for a bumpy ride…

Chances are you’ve already started reading and doing, which is ultimately the best way to learn. Here are a few invaluable tips that I can happily pass on from my experiences of designing for the web:

• Socialise. Don’t just read books because this is fundamentally one-way. Join Twitter and follow professionals who voice their thoughts and opinions – question it. Attend local networking events for some peer-to-peer geek conversations and you’ll be surprised at how much you pick up.
• Push web standards. So many web designers neglect the importance of valid XHTML/CSS. Read about W3C standards and you will realise that web design is about more than just looking pretty – you need sound technical design also. This is easily achievable as long as you practice it from the off. Don’t slip into using tables for layout and inline CSS styles – do things properly and it will become natural.
• If you have a client – talk to them. The single best way to design successful websites is by getting your clients views on their business/customers. Once understand their model, you can produce a more effective website than doing it blindly.
• Print design is NOT web design. Contrary to what many seem to think, web and print are not the same, and the skills do not necessarily cross-over.
• Drink tea. I’m not joking here – if you are stuck for inspiration, take a 10 minute tea break and when you come back you’ll more than likely have a solution.

I’ve been designing for the web for 10 years and I’ve made plenty of mistakes. The web was a simpler place when I began, with fewer standards and hardly any resources. What I’ve learnt is that you constantly need to be looking forward; be adaptable to change, and you will succeed.

Say hello Piglys!

The piggy especially, with its enormous button eyes, made me want to go out and buy a pack of Cadbury Buttons. It is almost as if they were designed just for me.

The new theme is a lot better – note the fancy tabs and how you can actually read things without squinting. It also remains true to the design brief, which was “I want animals with massive eyes!”

Yahoo’s Site Explorer had a redesign a little while ago, and sometime in the past couple of days Google Analytics has followed suit. Is it just me or is there an uncanny resemblance?

The Cheap Laugh

It’s hard to say how a logo like this gets through the design process without someone stopping and saying “wait a minute, that looks like two people bumming”. Perhaps, like a Necker Cube, you only see it if you’re looking for it, otherwise it just looks like an ordinary ‘K’. If you find this rude you’re just a tainted individual.

The It-Looks-Like-A-Penis

It baffles the mind how his could look like anything other than a penis. In fact, when anthony byrne employees hand over their business cards I’m surprised people don’t say “hey, you’ve got a penis on your business card”. Maybe they do.

The We-Let-The-Receptionist-Design-It

This is in fact the CIA’s Terrorist Buster logo. It was obviously designed by someone who has never seen a terrorist, or indeed heard much about them. In fact, drawing a relationship between terrorists and that happy chap Slimer seems in a little bad taste to say the least. We can only hope the CIA’s receptionist still doesn’t know that terrorists bear little resemblance to friendly ghosts.

The Someone-Likes-Elephants

Elephants on crack, that is. Perhaps the designer had a bad elephant experience as a child, or was the victim of an elephant stampede in which their home was destroyed. I can think of no other reason to have a rampaging elephant on your logo. No reason at all.

The OMG…OH…MY…GOD!

There aren’t sufficient words to describe this logo. I’ll only say that if anyone handed me a business card with this on it, I wouldn’t call them. In fact, I’d change my phone number and even my name to make sure they could never find me again. Safety first.

I’m pretty impressed at Patrick’s tactic – this is a very clever way to access a lot of design talent. At about £200 the prize fund is a fraction of what you’d have to pay for a “real” service, but a lot of designers will be drawn in by the challenge and the opportunity to get their work in front of an industry audience. I’ll be watching with interest, especially since Frog might be tempted to enter!
